Stewart Hunter’s visit, in his own words:
HAITI:
Purposefully, I have included no pictures of the devastation caused by the Jan. earthquake. Suffice to say, that exactly 6 months after that event, the Charbonneaus (our GW’s working in Haiti) took me on a tour of the disaster, right down into the epicenter. You have seen it for yourselves on the news channels.
I rather want to major on the side of HOPE for this most needy nation. Enough just cannot be said about the commitment and loyalty of Michel and Louise Charbonneau. They have been working in Haiti for 14 years! It was a very broken country before Jan. 2010 – and it will takes DECADES to build it into a lasting existence. Through ERDO (Emergency Relief and Development – PAOC) many of us gave to help with the need for water, food, tents etc. etc. and the Canadian government matched our giving.
One teenage girl is Stephanie. Zelda Mae and I sponsor her. She’s 19; she loves the Lord; Michel says she’s got the respect of her peers and he sees in her a great future leader, and it is her goal to become a medical doctor! This was my first time to meet her, and I told her over and over, “You can become whatever you want to become with God’s help, and WHEN you become an MD, please, please stay in Haiti to work with your people!”
Two urgent needs in the Charbonneaus’ work right now include: 1) a national, emerging leader to replace the one we all felt would eventually lead the program, but tragically he was killed in the quake, and 2) a builder from CA who will go and lead the building of a school for so many of the kids who come to the feeding program on Fridays and Sundays.
I have to tell you – Michel and Louise are at the TOP OF MY LIST OF HEROES! Pray for them!
My conclusion is to simply “thank you” for allowing me the privilege to be your eyes and ears. Zelda Mae packed neat little items for the Thomases and the Charboneaus that they could not get in The DR or in Haiti. YOU made that possible by your support. Hopefully my 4 days with each family helped to lift their load and bring encouragement.
