This Is My Story — Missions stories, past and present, from the frontlines.
The following story is taken from the theme Provision and Protection:
LET’S GO, GANG!
It shall come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear. (Isaiah 65:24)
I recall the many times when the Lord’s protection preserved our lives. One particular occasion that often comes to mind happened on a very warm summer night. We had finished the evening meal and Dad had called us all together for a time of family devotions. The house was built with the rooms in one long row, with a veranda running the full length of the building. As was our custom we each picked up a chair in the dining room and carried it out to the veranda a few feet away.
Dad would read from the Word and two members of the family each evening would lead in prayer. On this occasion Dad had finished reading the Word, and just as we were about to kneel in prayer, he suddenly said, “Each of you, take your chair and move to the other end of the veranda.” It was some distance, and the teenagers demurred, “It’s just the same as here, Dad.” Father just smiled and said, “Let’s go, gang!”
We had scarcely sat down again when a tremendous bolt of lightning crashed into the very place where we had been sitting. It split the tiles and the concrete on which they were laid, leaving a broad, black ribbon of ash and a strong odour of sulphur. Had we remained in that spot we would have all been killed.
We were a very shaken family and very humbled. We gave the Lord much praise and rejoicing for His goodness. We asked Dad what had caused him to make us move at that particular time. He replied, “I can’t explain it. I simply had a very strong urge that we needed to move-and right away!”
We were so grateful we had responded in obedience.

Their daughter, Ruth told this story to Phyllis Hutchinson (PAOC Archives).
You shall, it is true, often engage in combat; but your fight shall be with a vanquished foe. His head is broken; he may attempt to injure you, but his strength shall not be sufficient for his malicious design.
C.H. Spurgeon
