Holy Spirit Conference

We just returned from holding an exciting Holy Spirit Conference in a nation near Thailand at the invitation of the leadership of 1200 underground churches.  Don Mann and his wife Marie Jose were our guest speakers. The pastors in attendance represented 7 different denominations, all however, longing for a fresh touch from God. To hear them pray you’d never think they need a fresh anything. This country is changing rapidly – until recently pastors were regularly imprisoned for their faith. One third of the 120 pastors at the conference had been in jail.

Recently, this nation became a member of the World Trade Organization with the intention of having better relations with the West. Part of that agreement includes freedom of religion. In the rural areas this is yet to be realized as persecution still often occurs. Their passion is incredible. Every time they began to pray they prayed fervently and had to be stopped by the leader of the meeting because they won’t stop on their own. We watched as they sought God with all of their hearts and wept for the salvation of their nation. They are concerned that with the new freedoms in urban areas they are losing their edge spiritually. Persecution causes the church to grow. It’s a double-edged sword to have freedom yet the church doesn’t want to lose it’s fervour for Jesus just because things are slightly improving. In 1988 there were only 50,000 Christians, now there are approximately 3,000,000. The church is growing rapidly.

It’s a thrill for us to partner with the people of this nation. Their passion is contagious! Usually we read about these people in books, but to actually listen to them tell their stories first-hand is inspirational. We got a taste of their reality when on the last day the police showed up. We were a little concerned! Curtains were pulled, the room emptied slowly and we foreigners were told to stay put! The leaders negotiated with the police for 45 minutes.

The police finally left and the room filled slowly again. Two people were stationed at the doors on lookout and the meeting resumed quietly. It was sobering to experience a little of what they have experienced for many years.

Thanks for you partnership as we keep building the church together!!
